Fambily. The word started as a joke between my best friend, Carol Lynn and I back in the 80′s. It came from Linda Hamilton’s breathy utterance on an episode of Beauty and The Beast. But I’ve used it and abused it for years. You see, there are two kinds of relationships.
Family Is What You’re Born Into, Fambily Is Who You Choose!
It’s been said for many years that you can’t choose your family, but you can choose your friends. But what do you call those particular friends that are so much closer than the others and feel like blood relatives?
Fambily.
I’ve been blessed a number of times to have a very large fambily. Nice when you’re an only child in a dysfunctional family that apparently sprang out the nebulous ether without any other ties like grandparents, siblings or cousins. It includes folks from all walks of life; engineers, attorneys, coaches, bloggers, writers, costumers, bellydancers, fitness instructors and musicians!
Fambily goes beyond a support network
Your support network is critical when you’ve chosen to live a life outside the lines, by your own rules and formed by your own integrity. The people who inhabit that sacred circle are enrolled in your success and offer advice, assistance and honest feedback for you to use to fuel your journey. But your fambily contains members who are not only enrolled in your success but border on rabid fandom! Yet with all their emphatic support, just as in a family, there’s a level of honest feedback you just can’t get anywhere else.
