Creativity For Non-Creative People

ART-iculate YourSelf

There are two types of people in this world, or so we’ve been told: those who are creative or artistic and those who are not. This is one of the biggies when we talk about OughtaPilots getting in the way.

Do any of these statements sound familiar?

I can’t draw a straight line with a ruler
I have no artistic talent
I can’t draw
I’m just not creative
I have no imagination

For years, we’ve told ourselves we can’t draw or paint or do anything else that we consider creative. I stand to prove that’s wrong. You may not have a billion-dollar artistic talent, but you also just might. How will you know if you keep telling yourself you can’t?

A side effect of doing some sort of art is spillage into other areas of our lives. Even if you’re a so called left-brained analyst type, you’ll benefit from a fresh perspective.

Scientists have found there is no left or right brain activity at the exclusion of the other, but rather a sharing of impulses across the hemispheres that require use of all the talents a human being uses. Upleveling your artistic, creative side will only help stimulate your brain functions in other areas.

Your ARTistic Voice

An Artistic Voice is the way YOU and you alone express yourself through art. For some of us, that voice has been stifled over the years until we have forgotten it’s even there. As I teach in my Disconnect Your OughtaPilot program, Sing It Loud and Sing It Proud – You can rediscover your Original Song, the Song you were born to sing to the world and includes your Artistic Voice

I’ve had a dream for many years now that was born of a 5-year stint as an art instructor for developmentally disabled adults. Most of the 8 students I had were non-verbal and I struggled to reach them to even provide directions. We had a wonderful time together, I learned so much from them. But there was one woman in particular, who really instilled the vision of art as a voice for those who’ve lost their ability to communicate. Let’s call this woman, Lucille. She never spoke, never smiled, and no matter what the project, for the first year of the program, drew what looked like the evacuation plan map from the facility she lived in.

One day, she surprised us all by drawing flowers and a rainbow. She looked down at what she’d done and the smile it brought was one that rivaled the sun. My heart overflowed that I had finally reached her, she felt safe in the art class and she could express herself. Lucille went on to do many wonderful art projects, always with that happy smile.

After such a breakthrough, I was surprised a few weeks later that she had no smile, was tearful in class and was drawing the emergency evacuation plan again. I asked her caregiver who came with her if there was a problem and they told me she was being moved to a new care facility. The caregivers had no idea she was upset, since she was non-verbal, but when I mentioned the move as a good change, Lucille looked up at me and her eyes welled up with tears.

That’s when I knew art could provide a voice to those who had been silenced by any number of life experiences. I was reflecting on Lucille and the years I spent with that class and thought, how many other voices are looking for expression?

I believe we all have a creative side. It may have just been buried. In my new program ART-iculate YourSelf, I offer really simple creativity exercises that open new patterns in the mind, release any ties that keep that creativity captive and open up possibilities that can have immense effects on our lives.

Besides that, in its purest form, it’s a weekly playdate for grownups. When was the last time you got together with some friends and just played?

Especially for the Non-Artist

You don’t have to be artistic to come play — just open to try something new. We’ll be doing art projects involving many types of media. You may be surprised how creative you really are.

This product was designed with you in mind. For years, we’ve told ourselves we can’t draw or paint or do anything else that we consider creative. I stand to prove that’s wrong.

You may not have a billion-dollar artistic talent, but you also just might. How will you know if you keep telling yourself you can’t?

Let’s play and find out what nurtures that part of you that yearns to create, to play and to stimulate your soul.

Play Dates for “Grown Ups”

We’ll get together and leave our expectations at the door. When was the last time you joyfully made a mess just for fun? There will be a series of 6 sessions, one each week, to explore your inner child and your artistic soul. We’ll paint, we’ll sculpt, we’ll draw under loose guidance.

We all have artistic souls, just for some of us they show up differently.
